How to Split Shared Expenses Fairly

Splitting a shared bill sounds simple until three or four people have each paid different amounts at different times, and everyone's trying to remember who owes what. There's a fast way to work this out without a spreadsheet.

The core idea: total, then average

Add up everything everyone paid to get the total spend. Divide that by the number of people to get the "fair share" each person should have contributed. Anyone who paid more than their fair share is owed money; anyone who paid less owes money.

Settling with the fewest transactions

Rather than everyone paying everyone else, the cleanest approach matches the person owed the most against the person who owes the most, settles that amount, and repeats. This usually resolves a group's expenses in far fewer transactions than settling every pair individually.

A quick example

Three roommates spend ₹1,600 total on groceries: one paid ₹1,200, one paid ₹400, one paid ₹0. The fair share is about ₹533 each. The person who paid ₹1,200 is owed roughly ₹667; the person who paid nothing owes about ₹533; the middle person is owed a small amount too — the calculator resolves this into direct, minimal payments automatically.
