How Percentage Calculations Trip People Up

Percentages look simple, which is exactly why small mistakes slip through unnoticed. A few patterns account for most of the confusion.
Percentage of a number versus percentage change
"20% of 500" and "a 20% increase on 500" are different calculations that often get mixed up. The first is simply 0.20 × 500 = 100. The second means adding that 100 to the original 500, giving 600. Confusing "of" with "increase" or "decrease" is one of the most frequent sources of error.
Percentage change is not symmetric
A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not return you to the starting value. Increasing 100 by 50% gives 150; decreasing 150 by 50% gives 75, not 100. Percentage changes apply to whatever the current value is at that moment, not to the original number, which is why they do not simply cancel out.
Percentage points versus percent
Going from a 20% score to a 25% score is an increase of 5 percentage points, but it is a 25% relative increase in the score itself (5 divided by 20). These two ways of describing the same change produce very different-sounding numbers, and mixing them up can make a small change look dramatic, or a big change look small.
Rounding too early
Rounding an intermediate result before finishing a multi-step percentage calculation can shift the final answer more than expected, especially across several steps. It is generally safer to round only the final result, not the numbers used along the way.
