How to Compress an Image Without Losing Visible Quality

Image compression trades file size for detail, but the relationship is not linear — a large chunk of file size can often be removed before any visible quality loss appears, and only pushing further starts to matter to the eye.
Lossy versus lossless compression
Lossless compression shrinks a file without discarding any image data, but the size reduction is limited. Lossy compression (the kind JPG uses) discards some data permanently in exchange for much smaller files, and controlling how much is discarded is what a quality slider actually does.
Why moderate compression is usually invisible
At high quality settings, a lossy compressor is mostly discarding information the human eye barely notices, such as extremely fine detail in areas with little visual complexity. This is why a photo compressed to 70 to 80 percent quality often looks identical to the original at normal viewing size, despite being a fraction of the file size.
When compression becomes visible
Pushed too far, compression artifacts appear as blocky patches, blurred edges, or color banding, especially in images with sharp text, fine lines, or smooth gradients like skies. These areas reveal compression loss faster than busy, detailed photos do.
A practical approach
Rather than guessing a quality percentage, it helps to compress an image and compare it directly against the original at the size it will actually be viewed. A quality level that looks fine on a full screen might be unnecessarily high for a small thumbnail, or too aggressive for an image someone will zoom into.
